FAQ’s

Obstetrical Questions

When will I first see my Obstetrician?

Your first appointment will be scheduled around 12 weeks gestation. This date is based on your first ultrasound. This first ultrasound is scheduled by your family physician or clinic physician. For more information on pregnancy and prenatal visits go to

http://www.pregnancyinfo.ca/

How many ultrasounds will I get during my pregnancy?

You will receive a dating ultrasound to establish your due date. You will then be offered an ultrasound for genetic screening at 12 weeks. Your anatomical ultrasound will be scheduled around 20 weeks. Additional ultrasounds are arranged if deemed necessary by your doctor.

Can I find out the sex of my baby?

You will likely be able to determine your baby’s sex during your anatomical ultrasound at 20 weeks. Additional ultrasounds for sex determination are not covered by OHIP. There are self-paid ultrasounds that can be obtained. For more information see www.preciouspeeks.ca.

What do I do if I need medical care after office hours?

For any obstetrical emergencies, you can go to Windsor Regional Hospital, Obstetrical Triage on the third floor. You will be assessed by an obstetrical nurse and an Obstetrician is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for emergency care. Phone number is 519-254-5544 x 52728 .

Will my doctor deliver my baby?

All obstetricians in Windsor participate in an obstetrical call system which means that one doctor oversees the delivery room at a given time. Your doctor may be on call during your delivery but it is also possible that it will be another doctor. All obstetricians in Windsor follow the same protocols for labour and delivery and our doctors at SWWH have full confidence in our obstetrical program at Windsor Regional Hospital.

What do I bring to the hospital?

FAQ’s

Gynecological Questions

<br /> What is a pap smear?

A pap smear is a screening test for cervical cancer. It detects changes in the cervix related to the HPV virus. For more information see

https://www.hpvinfo.ca/

When do I need to have a pap smear?

Pap smear screening begins at age 21 for now, may change later, interval is 3 years until the age of 70.

I have been referred for an abnormal pap smear / colposcopy. What does this mean?

An abnormal pap smear could mean that you have been exposed to the HPV virus and that the cells on your cervix have been infected. The gynecologist will decide whether a repeat pap smear is necessary or if you require colposcopy. Colposcopy means looking at the cervix through a microscope to look for changes associated with the HPV virus.  Sometimes a biopsy is taken to help plan management. For more information go to www.southwestcancer.ca/sites/swrcpweb.lhsc.on.ca/files/resources/Abnormal_Pap.pdf

What happens if I forget to take my birth control pill?

Take your pill as soon as you remember and use barrier contraception for the remainder of the month. (You can also refer to the Stay on Schedule app located at www.sexandu.ca for further instructions)

I am scheduled for an IUD insertion? What can I expect?

An IUD is a plastic or copper T-shaped device that is inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy. A speculum is used to locate the cervix and place the IUD. The procedure takes less than 2 minutes to perform. If you have been prescribed an IUD from your doctor please bring the IUD with you to your appointment. If you do not have an IUD it can be prescribed by our physicians. If you are on your period, please do not cancel your appointment. IUD placement can be associated with cramping and our doctors suggest that you take 200-400 mg of ibuprofen before your appointment.

I missed my period and I’m on birth control.

Some birth control pills reduce or stop periods and this is normal. If you think you are pregnant, a home pregnancy test can be done after a missed period. For more information go to www.sexandu.ca/sos

I had unprotected sex and I don’t want to be pregnant.

Emergency contraception is available at any pharmacy without a prescription. The most common is called Plan B. For more information go to www.sexandu.ca.

I am pregnant and I'm not sure I want to keep the pregnancy, what are my options?

To schedule an appointment at the Options Clinic please call 519-985-2662.  You do not require a referral for this. You can make this appointment yourself. The Options Clinic is located at Windsor Regional Hospital.

I think that my monthly bleeding is abnormal. What do I do?

Menstrual bleeding is abnormal if it negatively affects your day-to-day life. Your doctor can help you determine if treatment is necessary. Sometimes ultrasounds or bloodwork can be helpful to determine treatment. For more information go to

https://www.yourperiod.ca/

My doctor told me that I need an endometrial biopsy. What does this mean?

An endometrial biopsy samples the lining of your uterus. This is usually done to determine why a woman is having abnormal uterine bleeding or to rule out cancer. The procedure involves inserting a 2 mm catheter through the cervix to sample the tissue.  The procedure takes less than 2 minutes and may cause mild to moderate cramping. This cramping may last a few minutes. Our doctors suggest that you take 200-400 mg of ibuprofen before your appointment.
